HOW ARE BROKERS PAID |
Some people think they can save money by purchasing insurance on the internet or directly from the company. Although this can be true with auto and home insurance, it is not the case with products discussed in detail on this site.
Brokers are paid by commissions from the policy you purchase. For the most part we do not charge fees on top of this. None of the products that have been reviewed on this site come with extra broker fees. There are a few cases and markets where this is done but it has never been a part of my practice.
For example if you go to the Blue Cross or Blue Shield web site and get a health insurance quote you will find it exactly the same price as a broker will give you. If you call their toll free number, you will get the same price a third time. Somebody has to be paid to do the initial work and someone has to be paid to service it. It is either going to be an inside employee through salary and bonuses or a broker.
Even more importantly, I have had numerous situations where someone has come into my office for help because they thought they could save money by “going direct”. They ended up purchasing a policy that effectively had “holes” in it. They discovered this after a serious claim. If they had gone through a quality broker this disaster would have been avoided. A broker represents you, not the insurance company. A quality broker will point out any holes contained in insurance polices that you are considering. We do not want you to have any surprises after a purchase. Remember, you don’t pay the broker the company does.
